COURTLAND—A Courtland-area man has been arrested for allegedly assaulting a 5-year-old girl, Southampton County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Michael R. Carotenuto, 28, was charged with felony object sexual penetration, a felony, and placed in the county jail under no bond, said Sgt. Wanda Covington.

The sheriff’s office on Aug. 2 received a report from Southampton County Social Services regarding a sexual assault allegation. Based upon an investigation, between July and August Carotenuto allegedly sexually assaulted the girl in the 21000 block of Indian Woods Trail, Courtland. He knew the victim, Covington said.
