Franklin golf team takes district title

PETERSBURG—For a second year in a row, Franklin High School’s golf team won the Tri-Rivers District title on Thursday.

The title qualifies the Broncos’ six top players for the regional tournament on Oct. 3 at Quinton Oakes Golf Course in Callao, where Northumberland is the host. Headed to the regional tournament will be senior Tony Bland and juniors Zack Hopkins, Grant Scarboro, Tevin Sumblin, Chad Benton and Clay Blythe.

Franklin, which posted a 14-1 season record, and Windsor will play in the district tournament at 9 a.m. Monday, Sept. 26, at Dogwood Trace Golf Course in Petersburg.

On Thursday, the Broncos shot a 199 followed by host Sussex with a 214 and Windsor, 225, while playing at Dogwood Trace.

Leading the way was Hopkins with a 44 for the 36-par, nine-hole course. Grant Scarboro shot a 45 for second and Bland shot a 51.
