COMO, N.C.—Lewis Savage Smith, 72, passed away at his home on Sunday, September 11, 2011.

He was a son of the late Joseph Henry and Minnie Mae Futrell Smith and was born in Buckhorn, Va., and reared in Newsoms and Boykins, Va.

He was an Army veteran during the Korean Conflict and retired from Union Camp Corporation after 31 years of service.

He was a member of Buckhorn Baptist Church.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 39 years, Cynthia Melvin Smith; his son, Joseph Lewis Smith and wife, Janie, of Murfreesboro, N.C.; two sisters, Elsie Lewis of Portsmouth, Va., and Lillian Lee of Richmond, Va.; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Carl and Elizabeth Allshouse of Chesapeake, Va.; brothers-in-law, William Melvin and wife, Abby, of Danville, Va., and Stephen Melvin and wife, Julie, of Chesapeake, Va.; and his “chosen” grandson, Christopher. He was predeceased by two brothers, Joseph Dallas Smith and Kinston Smith; and three sisters, Myrtle Bunch, Marie Owens and Cornellia Butler.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, September 17, 2011, at Buckhorn Baptist Church with the Rev. Hoyle Green officiating. The family will receive friends anytime and following the service at the residence at 208 Ebo Road, Como.
