NORFOLK—It will be “days” before it is known what led to the death of a Southampton High School football player, who passed in his sleep overnight Friday.

Results of an autopsy for Brian Rushing, 17, of Capron will not be released until lab work is completed by the state Department of Forensic Science in Norfolk, said Glenn McBride, district administrator for the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Norfolk.

“I wish I could give you a more accurate timeline, but the speed of those tests is beyond our control,” McBride said.

Rushing, a starting senior defensive tackle, on Friday night played in the game against Franklin.

He is the son of Donna Rushing and the late Derek Donald Scott Rushing.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, in the auditorium of Southampton High School with Pastor Charles Worth officiating. Interment will follow in Capron Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, at Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, and after the funeral at the VFW Post 4411 at the Franklin airport.

Memorials may be made in Brian’s name to True Word Christian Church, 31269 General Thomas Highway, Franklin, Va., 23851.
