A day after a big win on the gridiron, Southampton High School football players are dealing with the loss of a senior defensive lineman.

Southampton High School Principal Ailene Atkinson confirmed that 17-year-old defensive tackle Brian Rushing died overnight.

The school and community were dealing with the death the day after the Indians defeated Franklin High School 34-14 Friday night.

There has been no official word yet on the cause of death.

Rushing, the son of Donna Jackson Rushing of Capron, played football for FHS last year and was a “great student and a great athlete,” according to his former coach.

“He was a great young man,” said FHS Coach Darren Parker, who also taught Rushing. “He always had a positive attitude and always wanted to do whatever he could to help his fellow students.”

Atkinson said the thoughts and prayers of the faculty, staff and students at the school would be with the Rushing family.

“We’re heartbroken by the tragic death of one of our students, and we’re still trying to find out more information,” Atkinson said.

Atkinson said grief counseling would be available Monday for students who need it
