COURTLAND—A Franklin man was sentenced in Southampton County Circuit Court Thursday to six years in prison and 12 months in jail in connection with the beating and abduction of his girlfriend and a fire at their home.

Reginald Street, 44, was sentenced for attempted arson, destruction of property and abduction.

The charges stem from an incident in Franklin, where Street’s girlfriend ended up in the hospital with an eye that was nearly swollen shut, said Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Toni Duncan.

Duncan told the court that Street asked for sex and was denied by his girlfriend, who then tried to leave. Street kept her from leaving.

Duncan brought up the defendant’s “extensive criminal history,” which includes grand larceny and burglary convictions.

“He has not seemed to learn any lesson from being in jail previously,” Duncan told the court.

Street’s attorney Varinder Dhillion said his client has attempted to get help through anger management counseling and said the victim in the case has forgiven him.

“He wants to get the help he needs,” Dhillion said. “It’s the type of help the victim wants him to get.”
