ISLE OF WIGHT—The Isle of Wight County Board of Supervisors on Thursday delayed a vote on opposing a proposed coal-fired power plant in Surry County.
The supervisors were asked to oppose the proposed Cypress Creek Power Station during the June meeting and a resolution was drafted; however, supervisors voted 4-0 to hold off until the November meeting. Supervisor Kenneth Bunch abstained.
“It doesn’t affect how I feel about it, but it’s something I think we should take up later in the year,” said Supervisor Stan Clarke. “We’ve got a lot on our plate right now.”
Residents asked the board to oppose a 1,500-megawatt plant proposed by Old Dominion Electric Cooperative. The project in Dendron would create 250 jobs, but has drawn ire from some residents and others who argue it could damage the environment and will not help economic development efforts.
The board will meet at 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17.
