COURTLAND—Shirley Grey Walthall Pulley, 90, passed away August 1, 2011, peacefully in her sleep at Lakewood Manor in Richmond.

She leaves her family and many friends with comforting reflections on how she smiled through a life of service to others, and in doing so, inspired others to follow her positive example.

She was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Junius Waverly Pulley Jr.; and her parents, Elwood Grey and Stella Stowers Walthall of Altavista, Va.

She is survived by her children, Pam Katz and husband, Jonas of Henrico, Waverly Pulley and wife, Patsy of Midlothian, Glenn Pulley and wife, Pam of Danville, and Jan Lester and husband, David of Midlothian.

She is also survived by 10 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; sisters, Zada Crews of Lynchburg, Ruth Frazier of Altavista and Helen Sumpter of Eden, N.C.; and many nieces and nephews.

In her hometown of Courtland, she owned and operated The Waverly Shop Furniture Store with her husband, at the same time raising her children in a loving, happy home.

Mrs. Pulley was a longstanding member of the Courtland Baptist Church and more recently, a member of the First Baptist Church of Richmond.

Her interests included bridge, gardening, sewing and cooking.

The family wishes to express deep gratitude to the staff and community of Lakewood Manor for their many years of loving care, support, and friendship.

The funeral will be held at noon, Friday, Aug. 5, 2011, in the sanctuary of the Courtland Baptist Church with interment at Riverside Cemetery followed by a reception in the church fellowship hall.

A memorial service will be held at Lakewood Manor at a later date.
