CARRSVILLE—A soon-to-be retired Newport News shipyard employee will run against incumbent Kenneth Bunch for the Carrsville District seat on the Isle of Wight County Board of Supervisors.

Tom Gaskell said he decided to run as an independent in the Nov. 8 general election after the events that led to the board handpicking Bunch to take the seat vacated by Phillip Bradshaw. But that’s not his only frustration with the board.

“I’m just tired of them spending money,” the 65-year-old said. “I’m just not happy.”

Gaskell agrees a new Windsor Middle School is needed, but he doesn’t believe the county can afford to build it at this time.

If elected, he would fight to bring money back to the south side of the county.

“They have been taking money out of there all this time and not bringing it back,” Gaskell said.

He is married to Barbara Gaskell. Between them, they have three sons and four granddaughters.
