ISLE OF WIGHT–Isle of Wight County Schools has hired a new superintendent

Katrise Perera, the school improvement officer for Houston Independent School District, will replace Dr. Michael McPherson, who is retiring at the end of June.

As a school improvement officer, Perera led a team of nine principals in the areas of curriculum, strategic planning and professional development. Prior to that, she spent seven years as a middle school principal in Henrico County.

Perera has also served as an assistant principal, teacher and coach.

“I’m beyond excited about my appointment and am truly looking forward to the opportunity to serve the students of Isle of Wight, the board, the teachers, the staff and the community of this great district,” she said.

The search for a new superintendent began in January, with the assistance of the Virginia School Board Association. The board conducted a public survey and held community meetings to gain input into the superintendent selection process.

Of the 29 applicants, the board initially interviewed 12 candidates. The field was narrowed to three finalists who took part in a second round of interviews. The board unanimously selected Perera from among the finalists.

“Mrs. Perera emerged as a strong, energetic leader,” said Board Chairman David Goodrich. “She has an excellent track record and is highly regarded by colleagues and community members in the school systems she has served.”

Perera is pursuing a doctorate in educational leadership and policy study from Virginia Tech. She also holds a post master’s degree in administration and supervision from Virginia Commonwealth University, a master’s of arts degree in teaching from Mary Baldwin College, and a bachelor’s of arts degree in merchandising/marketing from the University of Louisiana.
