FRANKLIN—The Franklin City Council during its 7:30 p.m. Monday, June 13, meeting will discuss opening two ponds on city-owned property for fishing.
The fenced-in retention ponds behind the former Winn-Dixie and Armory Plaza are open to city employees with permission, said city manager June Fleming.
Resident Ronnie Joyner asked council during its May 23 meeting if the city would allow residents to fish the ponds.
Councilman Greg McLemore made a motion to extend the fishing rights to residents.
“I can’t think of a reason why we would allow employees to fish there other than special treatment,” McLemore said. “If they are available for employees, they should be available for citizens.”
Mayor Jim Councill said he would like more information before taking a vote.
Fleming has concerns over liability issues.
“I don’t know how safe it is,” she said. “Whatever we do, we need to look into it.”
