FRANKLIN—Nearly 60 classes with more than 85 sessions will be offered to rising second- through 12th-graders during Paul D. Camp Community College’s 2011 Kids College.

“We are always trying to expand our offerings,” said Director Teri Zurfluh. “Many of our participants return every summer, so we try to come up with different things that will hold their interest.”

Classes will be held on weekdays from Monday, June 20, through Friday, Aug. 12. Categories include the arts and expression, hobbies and interests, science, technology, engineering and math, and Student Success. The latter offers preparation classes for SATs and public speaking.

Bronco Federal Credit Union is conducting a free treasure hunt for younger students and a reality fair focused on finances for older students.

The Career Exploration category includes two Kids College academies, which are designed to expose students to a particular field.

“Is There a Doctor in the House?” will explore the health care field at Southampton Memorial Hospital and is for rising eighth- through 12th-graders. Returning this year is the Nursing Career Academy for rising sixth- through eighth-graders.

“We also are partnering with the Western Tidewater Tennis Association, which will offer three levels of youth tennis,” Zurfluh said. “There are six different weeks of camps available taught by local pro Ken Cussick.”

Fifteen kayak trips are planned through Blackwater Outfitters and Nottoway River Guides.
