$12M to fly governor around is wrong

To the Editor:

I was outraged after watching the news today and finding out Gov. Bob McDonnell uses state aircraft for nonessential business, including flying his family to a NASCAR race.

His office is telling other state agencies to tighten up and cut funding for most everything. Yet the state budgets $12 million a year to fly him around. One thousand dollars an hour is what that costs taxpayers.

There are, I think, three pilots that cost $300,000 a year and three aircraft that I bet have a hefty maintenance and storage cost. He could fly first-class commercial for a smidgeon of the $12 million we have to pay for his comfort.

I just think that’s wrong.
