Roy Chambliss

PETERSBURG—Roy Chambliss Jr. of Edmonds Avenue, Petersburg, Va., departed this life on Thursday, May 12, 2011.

Roy was the elder son of eight children born to Roy and Lula Barrett Chambliss in Franklin, Va., on May 15, 1931.

He received his early education in Franklin Public Schools and graduated from Hayden High School in May 1950. He attended Virginia State University where he graduated in 1954 with a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Education.

After graduation, he served in the United States Army until he was honorably discharged in 1958. Roy returned to Virginia State University, where he remained employed until he retired after 35 years of service.

He is survived by one sister, Ruby Chambliss Lawrence of Franklin, Va.; one brother, James Chambliss of Chesapeake, Va.; one brother-in-law, George F. Reed; six nieces, Marie Lawrence, Cathy Lawrence, Johnesta Blount, Belinda Reid, Vickie Reid and Pauline Reed Achua; four nephews, Jerome Reid, Alonzo Chambliss, Eugene Reed and Eric Reid; two great nieces, Kenyta Blount and Zora Achua; two great nephews, Benjamin Blount and Gregory Achua; one Goddaughter, Tameka Blount, and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.

A viewing will be held at 5 p.m. followed by a wake on Friday, May 20, from 7 to 8 p.m. at William N. Bland and Sons Funeral Home, 137 Harrison Street, Petersburg, Va.

A viewing will be held at 11 a.m. followed by the funeral service starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 21, at the East End Church of God, 401 East St., Franklin, Va. Bishop Stephen D. Willis will be the Eulogist. The interment is in the Southview Cemetery.
