WINDSOR—Doug Murelen sat in the 1947 Buick and took it all in.

He admired the candy-apple red exterior of the car his friend Frankie Bell purchased at a flea market in Gloucester for $30,000.

“It was worth every penny,” Murelen said. “I don’t think there’s another Buick that’s this nice. Everywhere you look, it’s letter perfect.”

Murelen and Bell sat together in the front of the vehicle and watched as visitors to Cecil Proffitt’s World of Wheels International Custom Auto Show passed by on May 7.

Bell said the show marked the first time the car had been driven since he purchased it eight months ago.

“It rides smooth as silk,” Murelen said.

While the Buick Supra was certainly the best car in the show for the two friends, it wasn’t the only car presented at Heritage Park in Windsor.

It was the show’s first year away from Cecil Proffitt’s farm in Colosse and the first year of a partnership between Proffitt and the Isle of Wight County Fair Committee, said Darlene Keyt, IOW events coordinator. She said Proffitt’s declining health and available space for the show were reasons for the move.

“We think it is a great event and we wanted to continue it,” Keyt said. “We wanted to expand it because we think this is another great family event for the county.”

More than 100 cars entered the show with an entrance fee of $20 per vehicle. Keyt said proceeds would be put back into the fairgrounds.
