Franklin girls lose 7-2 to Surry

SURRY—The Franklin Girls Tennis team lost 7-2 to Tri-Rivers District opponent Surry on Tuesday.

Missing two starters, the Lady Broncos faced a very different Surry team with all its seniors present. The match mirrored the teams’ last meeting; there were three tiebreakers and several extended games.

The Lady Cougars won four of six singles matches and all three doubles matches.

With Surry having a 6-2 lead and the match in hand, the No. 3 doubles played a 10-point super tiebreaker in place of the third set when Franklin split sets by winning the second set. Surry won the super tiebreaker to earn the seventh match point.

In singles action No. 1 Desiree Pulley (S) defeated Samantha Bruck 6-2, 6-1; No. 2 Jocelyn Harris (S) defeated Asya Lee 6-2, 6-4; No. 3 Jeanetta Sessoms (F) defeated LaJoi Clarke 6-0, 7-5; No. 4 Josephina Winfield (S) defeated Kaitlyn Trotter 6-4, 6-1; No. 5 Tyreccka Hawks (F) defeated Ashley Johnson 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3); and No. 6 Leyuan Zhang defeated JaShonda Elliot 6-2, 6-1.

In doubles action, No. 1 Pulley/Kristie Brown (S) defeated Bruck/Trotter 6-0, 6-0; No. 2 Clarke/Harris (S) defeated Maura Zurfluh/Elliot 6-1, 6-2; and No. 3 Tami Elder/Toni Elder (S) defeated T. Hawks/Rebecca Gray 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), 1-0 (10-7).

Surry is 1-4 in the district with one match remaining. Franklin stands at 5-9 overall, 2-3 in the district and will conclude its season on today, May 13, at the Appomattox Regional Governor’s School.
