Lady Broncos play three tiebreakers to beat Surry

FRANKLIN—In a Tri-Rivers District match that featured three tiebreakers and extended games and rallies, the Franklin girls’ tennis team came away with a 6-3 victory over Surry on Monday.

The host Lady Broncos took five out of six singles matches and one out of three doubles matches.

In singles action, No. 1 Desiree Pulley (S) defeated Samantha Bruck 6-1, 6-0; No. 2 Sharnice Williams (F) defeated Ashley Johnson 7-6 (8-6), 6-0; No. 3 Asya Lee (F) defeated Leyuan Zhang 6-3, 7-6 (7-5); No. 4 Jeanetta Sessoms (F) defeated Kristie Brown 6-3, 6-3; No. 5 Kaitlyn Trotter (F) defeated Diamond Barham 6-4, 6-2; and No. 6 Tyreccka Hawks (F) defeated Shakela Blowe 6-0, 1-0.

In doubles, Pulley/Brown (S) defeated Bruck/Williams 6-0, 6-2; No. 2 Kiera Cofield/Maura Zurfluh (F) defeated Johnson/Blowe 6-2, 6-4; and No. 3 Zhang/Barham (S) defeated Hawks/Rebecca Gray 6-2, 7-6 (7-2).

In action from Friday, Nandua was leading 2-1 against Franklin before the girls’ tennis match was rained out.

Doubles were played first. No. 1 Luz Diaz/Isabella van Clistern defeated Franklin’s Bruck/Trotter 8-2, and No. 2 Jasmine Hernandez/Emily Simpkins beat Cofield/Zurfluh 8-4.

Franklin’s lone match point came with No. 3 Hawks/Lee defeating Abby Fige/Rachel Fluhart 8-6.

In singles action No. 1 Diaz led Bruck 2-1, 15-all in game 4, No. 2 Williams from Franklin led I. Van Clistern 30-15 in game one; and No. 3 Lee from Franklin led 6-4 with game five just starting.

No other singles matches had started.

Nandua clinched the Eastern Shore District Title Thursday with a win over Northampton and advances to the Region A team tournament.

Franklin is 5-8 overall and 2-2 in the district.
