Athletes participate in Special Olypmics

FRANKLIN—Athletes from Surry County and Franklin competed in the annual area 21 Special Olympics Virginia in Franklin on Saturday.

After the playing of the “National Anthem,” Mona Sumblin, athletic director for Franklin High School and coordinator of the games, introduced Dr. Michelle Belle, superintendent of Franklin Public Schools. Belle welcomed athletes, parents and volunteers.

Area 21 Coordinator Vivian Evans and Tidewater Region Director Carl Earnshaw gave additional remarks.

Belle and Mona Murphy, vice chairwoman of the Franklin School Board, led the parade of athletes, coaches and volunteers around the track before the games began.

Athletes competed in various events from the softball throw to the 200-meter dash.
