Fewer homes expected for Courtland development

COURTLAND—A Chesapeake developer, who planned to build 40 homes off Flaggy Run Road in Courtland, has reduced the number to 29, according Beth Lewis, director of Community Development for Southampton County.

Site Improve Associates originally planned to go with minimum-size, half-acre lots for the 36-acre development known as Benson Woods and connect homes to the county sewer system in Courtland, Lewis said.

It would’ve required $200,000 in improvements to the sewer system’s pump station, she said.

“So they decided it was more financially (feasible) to reduce the number of lots, making them larger,” Lewis said.

The three-quarter-acre lots would have septic systems.

Site Improve Associates is seeking final approval on the project from the county so it can begin construction of infrastructure.
