WALTERS—An elderly woman was taken to Southampton Memorial Hospital after the sport utility vehicle she was driving slammed into Mount Carmel Christian Church shortly before the 11 a.m. Easter Sunday service.
Virginia State Police did not return an immediate phone call.
The Rev Jay Gunn, who did not want to identify the driver, said she was on her way to church when she apparently mistook the gas pedal for the brake.
“I was inside getting ready for the service when this took place,” Gunn said. “I didn’t hear a thing, but folks at the service who heard it said it was a terrible bang.”
Minimal damage was done to church on Walters Highway.
The service was delayed about 10 minutes, Gunn said.
