Ray L. Porter

FRANKLIN—Ray Lee Porter, 97, passed away April 21, 2011, at Southampton Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Southampton County, a son of the late Willie Herman and Martha Lou Cook Porter and was predeceased by his two wives, Edna Crumpler Porter and Blannie Barden Daughtrey Porter.

Mr. Porter was also predeceased by two step-daughters, Rita Byrum and Judy Rountree; two sisters, Annie P. Hedgepeth and Bessie P. Seldomridge; one brother, W. Marvin Porter; and a niece, Josephine H. Hancock.

He was a member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church, was retired from Union Camp Corporation and was an honorary member of Carrsville Ruritan Club.

Survivors include two sisters, Arie P. Wilkins and Lydia P. Griggs; one brother, Cecil L. Porter; nieces and nephews, Dorothy H. Wilson, Gilbert Porter, Lucille S. Brock (care giver), Martha Ann Williams, Betty G. Moore, Cecilia P. Creech, Lawrence Porter and John Griggs; step nieces and nephews, Alice W. Forrester, James Wilkins and Jeter Wilkins; three step-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 23, 2011, at Wright Funeral Home. Interment will be private.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
