FRANKLIN—Gertrude Whitley Grossman, 95, passed away April 12, 2011, at Southampton Memorial Hospital.

She was born on Christmas Day, 1915, in Southampton County, a daughter of the late Fletcher Lee and Amy Lillian Branch Whitley, and was predeceased by two husbands, W. Hunter Scott and Dr. William Grossman; one sister, Florence W. Loftin; and two brothers, Nurney and Willie Whitley.

Mrs. Grossman was a member of Hunterdale Christian Church.

She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Hunter Dale Scott Brown (Richard) of Midlothian; two sons, David T. Lawrence (Julie) of Hiawassee, Ga., and William Hunter “Bill” Scott of Nags Head, N.C.; four grandchildren, Wendi Jaskula (Robert), Jennifer Hufnagel (Ray), Thomas Lawrence (Stacy) and Hunter Scott; five great-grandchildren, Jacob Jaskula, Raymond Hufnagel, Davis Hufnagel, Drew Lawrence and Devin Lawrence; one sister and caregiver, Virginia Lee “Tootie” Wade of Franklin as well as her cherished dear friend and dance partner, Pete Onofrock.

Gertrude lived most of her life in Franklin, where she has left behind many dear friends. She has lived in Richmond for the past 25 years, where her many friends called her Trudy and enjoyed bridge games and dances on Friday nights.

She loved traveling to California to visit her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She was a beautiful lady inside and out with a great sense of humor, very young at heart and in her beauty. She was a very good friend to many people and she never let anything get her down. Many friends went to her with their problems, and she always told them to look at the bright side and think good thoughts.

The family would like to thank the nurses and doctors at Southampton Memorial Hospital and East Pavilion for treating her so kindly. They would also like to thank Chris Cole, Patsy Bridges and Gwynn Doughty for all the love they showed her.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 14, 2011, at Southampton Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. James W. Browder III officiating. Following the service, a memorial reception will be held at the Cypress Cove Country Club.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hunterdale Christian Church or a charity of your choice.
