Supervisors fight against James River Bridge toll

To the Editor:
A late comer to the battle against tolls on the James River Bridge, Tom Gaskill wrote that the Isle of Wight County Board of Supervisors (“IOW supervisors need to stand against bridge toll,” April 1) should take a stand against tolls.
Regrettably, Mr. Gaskill, while well intentioned, was uninformed in that all five of the supervisors, including his Supervisor Kenneth Bunch, unanimously took an official stand against tolls and voted to endorse the only state plan that does not have a James River Bridge toll component.
Isle of Wight is the only elected body to officially endorse the Patriot’s Crossing Plan and fight for no James River Bridge tolls.
In addition to that, Mr. Bunch and all Isle of Wight County supervisors have been working behind the scenes for the last two years to oppose tolls on the James River Bridge.
Mr. Gaskill needs to know this is a Virginia Department of Transportation and state decision, and hopefully, the state will listen to the area’s regional input, where his Isle of Wight County Board of Supervisors has been working very hard and which we must continue.
Mr. Gaskill’s supervisor, Kenny Bunch, has been a key player in the no-toll effort, and we welcome Mr. Gaskill’s newly informed support.
It is our personal mission to work to prevent this toll, which will so adversely affect Isle of Wight County citizens. The Isle of Wight County Board of Supervisors will continue to lead the opposition.
