SHS girls’ tennis team defeats Franklin

FRANKLIN—The Southampton High School girls’ tennis team defeated host Franklin 8-1 on Friday.
Franklin’s lone win for a second time this season came from No. 5 Tyreckka Hawks, who played her opponent into a tiebreaker and won 9-8 (7-5).
Without the services of No. 2 Sharnice Williams, who was ill, the Lady Broncos moved up the ladder one position and JaShonda Elliot was pressed into service at the No. 6 singles.
For Southampton, No. 1 Kendra Edwards defeated Samantha Bruck 8-0; No. 2 Emily Andre defeated Asya Lee 8-0; No. 3 Texie Blythe defeated Jeanetta Sessoms 8-0; No. 4 Rachel Edwards defeated Kaitlyn Trotter 8-5; and No. 6 Jasmine Wyche defeated JaShonda Elliot 8-3.
In doubles play, Southampton took all three doubles matches with No. 1 Andre/Blythe defeating S. Bruck/T. Hawks 8-0; No. 2 K. Edwards/R. Edwards defeating A. Lee/ J. Sessoms 8-2; and No. 3 J. Wyche/Kiana Tynes defeating Kiera Cofield/Maura Zurfluh 8-1.
