Grant named track invitational MVP

CHARLES CITY—Franklin senior Justin Grant was named most valuable player for the boys during Saturday’s Charles City High School Invitational, in which the Broncos place fourth out of eight teams.

Grant won the 200-meter run and qualified for the Region A Track Meet. He also ran anchor for the first-place Franklin 4X100 relay team, which was clocked at 46.2. Others on the team were Shaquan Cook, Josh Walker and Reshard Sumblin.

Lavon Evans placed second in the shot put; his 48’ throw earned him a place in the Region and State tournaments. He also placed second in the 100-meter dash and fifth in the long jump.

The second 4X100 relay team of Travis Brown, JaVonte’ Blacknall, Nathan Jones and Markele Wiggins improved its time to 49.4.

Sumblin finished second in the long jump with a distance of 18’ 2.5,” third in the triple jump at 35’ and seventh in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.4.

Xavier Freeman contributed to the team points with his seventh-place finishes in the mile run and 300-meter hurdles. Blacknall placed seventh in the triple jump.

Other schools participating were Hampton High, Highland Springs, Warhill, Sussex Central, Mathews, Lancaster and Charles City.
