All Western Tidewater post offices to remain open

FRANKLIN—None of the post offices in Western Tidewater will be affected under an efficiency plan announced by the U.S. Postal Service Friday, said Fran Sansone, a spokeswoman for Hampton Roads and Eastern Shore post offices.

That includes the Courtland post office, which in early February was rumored to be closing. Some residents contacted lawmakers, while others started a petition to keep the office open.

“That was one of those rumors that somebody hears something, and it turns into something it wasn’t,” Sansone said.

The postal service is trying to cut costs after experiencing a loss in mail volumes and projecting a $238 billion shortfall during the next 10 years. The postal service does not receive any tax dollars, relying instead on proceeds from the sales of postage, products and services.

“We always have an ongoing review, and if and when a decision is made, we will notify customers,” Sansone said.
