FRANKLIN-Robert Gilliam McGhee, 77, known to his family and friends as “Gil” went to be with his Lord and Savior on February 25, 2011. He was surrounded by his loving family at his bedside.

A lifelong resident of Franklin, he was the son of the late James Linwood and Emma Simpson McGhee. Gilliam was retired from Union Camp Corporation after 33 years service in the Roll Finishing department. He was a lifelong member of Franklin Congregational Christian Church and had previously served as a deacon and usher. Gilliam loved country and gospel music and spent hours with his “Spoucie” watching the Grand Ole Opry. Gilliam also enjoyed playing the Dobro, pedal steel guitar, and collecting hats and belt buckles.

Left to cherish his memory is his devoted wife of 57 years, Jackie Bryant McGhee; two daughters, Terry M. Blythe (Danny Drake) and Allison M. Duck; a devoted son-in-law, Glen Duck; one brother, Russell McGhee (Gloria); six grandchildren, Courtney B. Jackson (Jeff), Kirstin B. Riddle (Stephen), Chelsea B. Blythe (Shawn Garner), Jacqueline Lindsey Darden (Cody Richards), Megan E. Duck, and Benjamin Robert Duck; and two great-grandchildren, Chase and Elani Jackson.

“Gil” was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He had nicknames for all of his children and grandchildren. He was adored by his wife and treasured by his children and grandchildren. Although, his love for his family was profound, his love for his Savior Jesus Christ was unwavering. He will be missed greatly and we look forward to the day when we can see him again in Heaven.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 pm Tuesday, March 1, 2011 at the Franklin Congregational Christian Church with the Rev. James H, Hyatt, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow at Poplar Spring Cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service at the church fellowship hall, and suggests memorials be made to the Franklin Congregational Christian Church.
