Progress 2011, inserted in today’s edition, pays tribute to the working people of Western Tidewater.

Past Progress editions have focused more on the community’s leadership class. Franklin, Southampton County and Isle of Wight County are blessed with fine leaders who are deserving of recognition. But those leaders will be the first to tell you that it’s the working class that makes Western Tidewater tick.

Progress 2011, which documents 24 hours in the life of our community, tells the stories of those who protect us from harm, educate our kids, feed our bellies, nurse us when we are sick, and provide other essential services.

In a time of economic hardship for our community, it is these underappreciated workers who keep our economy humming.
