Scared away from Franklin by Navy plan

To the Editor:

My husband and I are retired. We have been looking for a quiet, peaceful, friendly little town to settle down and still be close to family in Chesapeake.

We have been looking for the last 14 months. Finally, we thought, we have found the perfect house on our wish list and location to match — walking distance from the YMCA and local hospital down the street.

Local Realtors did not disclose to us the proposal of the Navy’s use of the municipal airport. We were looking for peace and quiet!

Then we hear that the City Council voted down a Navy proposal to use the municipal airfield, and now we are reading “it’s not over.”

This uncertainty has caused us to rethink our decision to move to Franklin, and I am sure, will cause others to do the same.

I liked a comment made by another reader that there are more houses for sale in the six-mile radius of Franklin than the 600-mile radius of Southampton County.

Franklin will have a lot more empty houses in the future if this plan goes forward.

I planned on being a Franklin resident.
