COURTLAND—A sixth man has been charged with first-degree murder for the Oct. 7 shooting of Darrin Lee outside his home at Southampton Meadows Park.

Southampton County Sheriff’s Office charged Ernest W. Jones, 22, of Portsmouth in connection with the 28-year-old’s murder.

Others facing first-degree murder charges are Rasheed Brown and Shahon Cumbo, both 21, of Franklin; and Darrin L. Robinson, 20, Bruce L. Boone, 18, and Dayquan Eley, 18, all of Suffolk.

Robinson, Boone and Eley were charged the day after the murder. Cumbo was arrested on Oct. 26 and Brown was charged in early December.

Sgt. Wanda Covington with the sheriff’s office could not say Monday if anyone else would be charged. Lee died from a single gunshot wound to the head. Police indicated robbery was the motive.

“In a charge like first-degree murder, particularly in this case when you have six charged, each of those persons could have theoretically done different things,” Covington said. “But even though a person may not have directly pulled the trigger, if he is involved in some formal fashion, under the code, (he can be charged with murder).”

She would not release the type of gun was used to kill Lee.

The suspects knew each other from growing up in the same neighborhood, Covington said.

All but Jones are scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 8, preliminary hearings at the courthouse in Courtland. The hearings will be held to determine if there is enough evidence for their cases to continue.

Covington as of Monday had not received a subpoena for Jones’ hearing.

He was picked up in Portsmouth on Thursday and brought to the Sheriff’s Office Friday. Jones is incarcerated under no bond.
