Scout Joshua Derrickson Turner of Troop 17 was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout on Jan 5.

For his Eagle Scout project, Turner built picnic tables for High Street United Methodist Church, where he is a member.

The son of Jo Anne and David Turner of Franklin, he graduated from Southampton High School and is a freshman at North Carolina Wesleyan College, where he plays football.

Turner began as a Cub Scout. Over the years, he remained active in the organization sponsored by his church. Turner held several leadership positions and earned 24 merit badges, of which 12 were required for becoming an Eagle.

He attended Chickahominy, Pipsico and Bayport Boy Scout camps, where he was named most spirited camper.
