Southampton County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday charged Samuel Boyd, 20, of the 100 block of Center Street with robbery, malicious wounding and using a gun while committing a felony.

On Jan. 4, the victim, who was in her 60s, came home just before 6 p.m. to be confronted by Boyd as she was getting out of her vehicle, said Sgt. Wanda Covington. He was allegedly carrying a semi-automatic handgun and demanded her purse. The woman struggled with the Boyd.

“The suspect then hit the victim in the head with the weapon resulting in significant injuries,” Covington said.

Boyd ran off with the purse.

A police dog followed a track that ended where authorities believe Boyd parked his vehicle. A small dark-colored automobile was seen parked on the side of the road with its flashers on just yards away from the victim’s home just before the robbery.

The investigation led by Lt. Jimmy Ricks with the Sheriff’s Office turned into numerous leads and tips. Boyd was charged based on information received and evidence in this case.

He is at Western Tidewater Regional Jail on unrelated charges. Boyd was brought to the Sheriff’s Office to be served his new charges and was remanded back to Western Tidewater without bond.
