Road crews prepare for snow

FRANKLIN—Virginia Department of Transportation on Wednesday night completed applying anti-icing solution to portions of routes 58 and 460 in preparation for today’s forecasted 3 to 5 inches of snow.

Applying this saline solution helps to lower the freezing point of the road surface and prevents a bond between the roadway and ice formation. Pre-treatment can be applied up to 48 hours before a snowfall.

State and contractor crews are on stand-by to monitor roadway conditions and will be out there when the precipitation starts, applying abrasives for traction, with emphasis on bridges, overpasses and ramps.

Ice and snow can still produce hazardous driving conditions, even when roads are treated.
