SEDLEY—No one was hurt in a Saturday fire that destroyed a Sedley-area home.

Resident Galinda Elliot and her family were not home when the fire broke out at 4:15 a.m., said Sedley Fire Chief Keith Rose. They were at the hospital, where Elliot’s daughter was delivering a baby.

The fire at the Burdette Road home near Black Creek Road is believed to have started near the refrigerator, Rose said.

“I don’t know if it was from the refrigerator or something else in that area,” he said.

The cause of the fire appears accidental.

It’s believed a passerby spotted the fire and reported it using a cell phone, Rose said. The call initially went to the emergency-calling center in Isle of Wight County, although the home was in Southampton County.

When firefighters arrived, about three-quarters of the home was in flames, Rose said.

“All but one end was pretty much on the ground by the time we got there,” he said. “All we could do was put it out and save anything we could save.”

The home, which Elliot shared with her daughter and a teenage son, was not insured.

About 25 firefighters from Hunterdale, Franklin and Carrsville assisted. Courtland Rescue also assisted.
