ISLE OF WIGHT—Isle of Wight County Board of Supervisors Chairman Phillip Bradshaw announced Thursday he would resign from the elected position he’s held for 17 years.

The news came one day after Bradshaw accepted the job as Isle of Wight County Schools’ new chief financial officer, which pays $95,333 annually. He replaces Rachel Yates, who resigned.

Bradshaw’s resignation from county government will be the end of an era. His dad, Joel C. Bradshaw, served for 18 years as a supervisor; his son followed in his footsteps, beginning his tenure in January 1994.

Phillip Bradshaw did not have to resign. He said it was his choice.

“Believe it or not, it wasn’t as difficult as you think,” Bradshaw said. “It’s a decision my wife and I made together. We prayed about it. We’re very excited.”

“It would be an emotional and mental strain to try to hold two full-time jobs, and that may not be good for me,” he continued. “I’m looking at time to spend and relax with my family.”

Bradshaw’s last day as supervisor will be Nov. 30. A formal announcement will be made at the supervisors’ regular meeting on Thursday, Nov. 18.

“I have enjoyed my tenure on the Board of Supervisors,” Bradshaw said. “I cherish the fact that I have had an opportunity to serve my community, and I will use my experience and training to continue to serve this great county — just in a different capacity. I am excited to have this opportunity to remain in public service for the citizens of Isle of Wight County.”

Representing the Carrsville area, Bradshaw’s four-year term expires in 2013.

County spokesman Don Robertson said he believes the Board of Supervisors may have to appoint a replacement.

“I’m not totally sure of all the specific details,” Robertson said. “I guess, generally speaking, the board will have to take under consideration whether or not they will appoint someone to fill out Mr. Bradshaw’s term. There may have to be a special election.”

Bradshaw began working for the school district on Thursday. He said he’s thrilled with the opportunity.

“I was encouraged by quite a few citizens to apply. I think there is a lot I can offer,” he said.

Bradshaw brings 30 years of business experience to the school division, working for more than 20 years with International Paper in Isle of Wight County. He most recently served as regional accounting manager for Mastec Inc. based in Miami.

Bradshaw received his bachelor’s degree in accounting, as well as his master’s degree in business administration from Old Dominion University.

“The chief financial officer position is a key position in the school division, especially now as we navigate new economic conditions,” said Dr. Michael McPherson, division superintendent. “Mr. Bradshaw’s knowledge of financial operations, the division’s finances, and the county’s resources will ensure a seamless transition as we develop next year’s budget.”
