COURTLAND—Nine-year-old Cameron Longoria found himself in an intimidating situation Sunday.

In the second round of a double elimination cornhole tournament at Southampton County Fairgrounds, the Franklin youth and his teammate, 9-year-old Chase Harrell of Surry, were pitted against Tony Longoria and Allen Drewry. Tony Longoria is Cameron’s father.

“He’s a semi-pro,” Cameron said about his father.

For that matter, Drewry, also of Franklin, is semi-pro. Drewry ranks 37th among 117 of the best players in the world with the American Cornhole Organization, the governing body for the sport.

Cameron and Chase ended up playing Longoria and Drewry after winning three out of four matches in the preliminaries and winning their first match in the tournament.

The boys lost 21-6 to Longoria and Drewry and placed 14th in the tournament. Longoria and Drewry ended up winning the 19-team tournament, defeating Surry brothers Willie and Jamie Wooten in the finals.

Longoria, who hosts and plays in cornhole tournaments most weekends and oftentimes takes his son, has played against Cameron once. Longoria admitted he went a little easy on him during the Sunday fundraiser for 11-year-old cancer victim Madison Arnot of Carrsville.

“I played a little loose, but he’s good,” Longoria said about his son, who at 4-feet tall has no problem tossing the one-pound, plastic pellet-filled cornhole bag 27 feet and dropping it on a 2-by 4-foot raised board for one point. Cameron also got several to go in the hole for three points.

When it comes to playing at home, Longoria admits he gives his son no leeway.

Longoria’s girlfriend, Brooke Moxley of Franklin, likes seeing father and son play.

“I think it’s cute,” Moxley said. “Cameron is like his dad’s shadow. One day he’s gonna get him.”

Over the Fourth July, Cameron and his dad played on the same team and won.

“It felt kind of good,” Cameron said.
