Barbara Ann Skinner Edwards, a native of Suffolk, Va., slipped away on Monday, Oct. 18 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

One of “The Skinner Girls” from Gates Road, Barbara was the fifth of eight children born to Mary D. Skinner and the late Henry B. Simmons of Suffolk.

Barbara retired in February as a Section 8 Specialist with the Isle of Wight Department of Social Services.

A loving, willing and giving individual to all of whom crossed her path, Barbara, an angel among us, gave so much of herself, her time and of her most well-known talent, sewing as she made, designed, hemmed and mended numerous articles of clothing as well as broken hearts for individuals and organization all around Hampton Roads.

Barbara leaves behind a daughter, Carnell Edwards-Lewis, grandson Cameron Wayne Lewis and a son-in-law, Wayne Kevin Lewis, all of Richmond; her mother, Mary D. Skinner of Franklin; five sisters, Margaret Lee and Mary A. Holloman of Franklin, Ruby S. Dempsey and Ruth E. Crocker of Suffolk, and Jacque` Addison-Jones of Chesapeake; one brother-in-law, James J. Dempsey of Suffolk; nine nieces, Debbie Lowery, Tonya McDonald, Tabitha Jones, Alethia Faison, Ashley Crocker, Jazmin Addison, Techera Jones, Keaunna Jones and Sumur Turner; four nephews, Travis Dempsey, Deshay Skinner, Nadjah McDonald and Victor L Jones; a host of cousins; and extended family, relatives and friends.

Homegoing services will be held at Oak Grove Baptist Church, 35441 S. Quay Road in Franklin on Saturday, Oct. 23, 2010, at 1 p.m. Viewing of the remains will be prior to the services.
