Safety top concern for Navy plane landings

To the Editor:

The mayor’s letter concerning the Navy’s use of the airport (“City sensitive to concerns about Navy’s plan,” Wednesday, Oct. 13) spoke to private aviation, said noise issues will be demonstrated and said an environmental impact study will be done.

It conspicuously left out what should be the number one concern — safety. With 20,000 to 40,000 touch-and-go landings per year (depending on your source of information), surely there are safety issues that must be addressed.

In Virginia Beach, for example, there are clearly defined Accident Potential Zones around Oceana and Fentress. Do such areas exist here? Where are they, and what lies inside of those areas?
