Three out of six of tonight’s scheduled football games have been postponed due to the weather.

Southampton and Windsor high schools will play their rescheduled home games at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2. Franklin High School will play its homecoming game against West Point at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 4.

Southampton, Isle of Wight and Nansemond-Suffolk academies will still play their home games at 7 tonight, despite the 14 inches of rain that fell between Tuesday and this morning.

Tidewater Academy is not scheduled to play this weekend.

“The water is still standing on the field,” Franklin Athletic Director Mona Sumblin said this morning. “There’s a concern for safety for the athletes and dealing with people and all the mud.”

Southampton High School, which was closed on Thursday and Friday due to the weather, also postponed its game against Bluestone High School due to field conditions.

“The field is wet,” said Indians Athletic Director Littleton Parker. “It’s too wet to play, and it will tear it up bad.”

Windsor High School postponed its game against Northumberland because school was canceled today as well as Thursday.

“When there’s no school, there’s no activities,” said Athletic Director Chuck Parish.

At Southampton Academy, Coach Dale Marks said the field looks good.

“There’s one little damp spot,” Marks said. “It drains very well over here. As a matter of fact, we could play a baseball game today.”

The baseball field is next to the football field and is dry enough to play on, he explained.

“It’s really amazing how quickly (it drains),” Marks said.

Isle of Wight plays Fuqua and Nansemond-Suffolk plays Virginia Episcopal School.
