PETERSBURG—For the first time in more than 10 years, Franklin High School’s golf team won the Tri-Rivers District Tournament at Dogwood Trace Golf Course on Tuesday.

The Broncos, who also won the Tri-Rivers District Title with a 19-3 record, will advance to the regional tournament at 9 a.m. Monday, Oct. 4, at Bay Creek Golf Club in Cape Charles.

“I’m excited for the kids,” said Franklin Coach Dave Lease, who was named Coach of the Year for the Tri-Rivers District.

Franklin scored 440 overall. Surry followed with 449 and Windsor 533. Sussex did not have enough players for a team, yet Sussex player Jarod Latham won the tournament with an 88. Latham was named the district’s Player of the Year.

Placing in the top 10 for Franklin were sophomore Zack Hopkins, fourth overall with a 105; junior Tony Bland, fifth with a 110; sophomore Grant Scarboro, seventh with a 112; and his brother, senior Ben Scarboro, eighth with a 113.

From Windsor High School, Cody Reese placed third with a 101 and Jeremiah Swartz finished ninth with a 115. Both will advance to the regional tournament.

Hopkins, Bland and Reese were named to the All-District Team.

The two top teams at the regional tournament as well as the top six individuals who are not members of those two teams will advance to the state tournament.

Lease is hopeful for the Broncos.

“We’ve got to play our best round of golf all year,” he said. “We have to improve by 40 points. We can do it. If they have a good round — anything can happen on any given day.”
