Southampton board to consider support of Sussex ‘mega-site’

COURTLAND – After voting to support an industrial “mega-site” in Greensville County last month, Southampton County supervisors will consider a similar request from another neighboring county tonight.

Sussex County officials are asking for Southampton County’s support of a proposed 4,000-acre “mega site” west of Waverly along U.S. Route 460. The property is privately owned, but the county is in the process of obtaining purchase options.

Sussex County officials – like their Greensville County counterparts – intend to submit a grant application to the Virginia Economic Development Partnership to assist in acquiring and developing the site.

In correspondence to board members, Southampton County Administrator Mike Johnson said the county “stands to benefit substantially if Sussex County is successful in luring a major manufacturer to their site.”

The Board of Supervisors meets at 6 p.m. at the Southampton County Office Center.
