COURTLAND—A Newsoms man accused of a 2009 murder in Courtland is set to appear in Southampton County Circuit Court for a jury trial beginning on Tuesday, Sept. 28.

Troy Mayfield is accused of fatally shooting 20-year-old Brandon Keith Turner at an apartment complex on Oak Trail on the night of March 3. When authorities arrived, they found Turner suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He died at the scene.

It was the second time Turner had been attacked at the apartment complex. He was shot in the face at point-blank range there on May 31, 2008. Eric Parker of Franklin was sentenced in February for the 2008 shooting.

Mayfield, who was arrested in December, faces charges of first-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of murder.
