GREENSVILLE—Southampton High School senior Justin McHenry placed fifth overall during a Wednesday cross country meet against five other schools.

McHenry completed the course in 19:39 to help the Indians to a third-place overall finish.

Other SHS runners rounding out the top 25 overall were Luckett Allen 17th, junior Bryan Draper 18th, senior Jeffrey Vincent 19th and senior Jeffrey Raiford 24th.

Southampton ran against Greensville, Powhatan, Prince Edward, Northampton, Franklin and Nottoway high schools.

In the girls’ race, Lady Indian Kirstyn Andrew led the team with an eighth overall finish with a time of 27:27. Emily Fuller finished 19th overall.

In other action, the Indians lost 20-35 during a home meet against Northampton Monday.

McHenry won the 3.1-mile race in 19:25.

“It was actually a little slow for him,” Edwards said. “He usually runs 18:00, but it was a really hot day — one of those 90-degree days.”

Luckett finished 7th overall with a time of 21:06; Vincent eighth in 21:06 and Draper 10th in 21:19.

Edwards looks for the Indians to finish in second or third in the district. He bases that on their times so far this year, which are better than normal.

“They’ve been building and getting faster,” Edwards said.
