COURTLAND—The Southampton High School volleyball team is 8-1 overall and 1-0 in the Southside District.

In other action, the varsity team also went 4-1 during a 32-team tournament at the Virginia Beach Field House last Saturday and advanced to the Gold Division Championship Bracket.

“I am proud of the girls, they fought hard all day,” said Southampton Coach Chad Brock. “It was an exhausting experience for all of us; by the end of the day everyone was spent.”

“We have invested a lot of time on conditioning and we competed hard all day at a high level,” Brock continued. “This will go a long way toward preparing us for the rest of the season.”

Tournament

At the tournament, the Lady Indians started off by beating Warhill High School in straight sets (25-13, 25-19 and 25-13). They then defeated Christchurch School 2-1(23-25, 25-6, 25-15).

The Lady Indians followed with a win over Bayside High School in straight sets (25-10, 25-21 and 25-10). They then defeated Mathews High School 2-0. After that, the Lady Indians fell to Mathews High School 2-0.

Candace Earls led Southampton, finishing with a tournament total of 112 aces, 23 digs, 15 assists, 15 saves, 6 kills and 3 blocks.

Teammate Kendra Edwards finished with a tournament total of 67 assists, 10 digs, 10 saves and 6 aces. Marisa Cabell finished with 45 digs, 10 aces, 10 blocks, 10 saves and 8 kills.

Lady Indian Megan Revelle had 30 digs, 23 kills, 15 saves, 6 blocks and 5 aces. Regina Artis finished with 23 kills, 10 blocks, 10 digs, 4 aces and 2 saves.

Southampton’s Janie Young made 20 digs, 5 kills, 5 saves and 3 aces. Merdie Ellis finished with 10 digs and 5 saves.

Leah Burgess had 6 digs, 3 saves and 2 kills. Jessica Story finished with 2 digs, 2 saves and 1 kill.

Claire Cogsdale finished with 5 digs. Jenna Story had 3 digs and 1 kill. Meredith Coggsdale finished with 1 kill.

Varsity action

In the varsity game against Windsor on Tuesday, the Lady Indians won in four 4 games (22-25, 25-15, 25-15 and 25-21).

Edwards led the varsity squad with 30 assists, 4 kills and 2 blocks. Artis had 27 kills and 7 blocks. Cabell finished with 9 kills, 6 aces and 4 blocks.

Earls finished with 4 aces, 4 assists and 3 kills. Revelle made 9 kills. Young finished with 3 kills.

“It was a really tough game, and the girls really stepped up,” Brock said.

On Thursday night the Lady Indians hosted the Lady Barons of Bluestone High School for their first district game of the 2010 season.

The Lady Indians won in straight sets (25-20, 25-6 and 25-23).

“Tonight we came out flat,” Brock said. “We were passing okay, we weren’t hitting good and we were not aggressive. We finally settled in and started doing the things we usually do. We did well, we passed well and we served well.”

“Windsor doesn’t have a lot of weaknesses,” he continued. “They hustle, they hit well and we just finally got on top of them. Once we got the edge, we just kept the pressure on them and we’re able to beat them. We can’t let them get in the game. They could very easily beat us if we’re not on our A-game.”

Edwards led with 19 assists and 1 block. Earls finished with 8 assists, 5 kills and 4 aces. Artis made 6 kills, 4 blocks and 2 aces.

Revelle finished with 10 kills and 1 block. Cabell made 4 kills, 1 block and 1 ace. Young finished with 2 aces and 2 kills. Cogsdale had 2 kills, 1 block and 1 ace. Jessica Story finished with 3 kills. Burgess and Ellis each finished with 1 ace. Jenna Story finished with 1 block.

Junior Varsity

The JV team is 4-0 overall and 1-0 in the Southside District.

On Monday night, the Lady Indians hosted Windsor. In the JV game the Lady Indians won in straight sets (25-23 and 25-14). Madison Cabell led the JV squad with 7 aces, 4 kills and 1 assist. Grayson Drake finished with 4 assists, 3 kills and 1 ace.

Lady Indian Samantha Billups finished with 3 aces and 2 assists. Teammate Kaylee Edwards had 1 ace. Lindsey Harrup finished with 1 ace and 1 kill.

Southampton’s Madeleine Khale finished with 2 kills. Bethany Vann finished with 1 ace and 1 kill.

In the JV game on Thursday against Bluestone, the Lady Indians won after an exciting nail-biting tiebreaker in the third set. The Lady Barons came out strong and won the first set 25-19.

The Lady Indians got their heads in the game and won the second set 25-16.

The Lady Indians finished off the Lady Barons in the tiebreaker set 15-10.

Drake led the JV squad with 7 assists, 4 kills and 3 aces. Cabell finished with 6 kills and 5 aces. Billups finished with 6 assists and 2 kills. Edwards made 3 aces and 3 kills. Khale finished with 5 kills and 1 assist. Harrup had 1 assist and 1 kill.

The Lady Indians on Monday, Sept. 20, will travel to Windsor High School. The games begin at 5:30 p.m. starting with the junior varsity game.
