Late-game TD gives Franklin 21-17 win

MATHEWS — Martinez Hill’s 4-yard run plus 2-point conversion with 8:25 left in the game gave Franklin a 21-17 come-from-behind win over Mathews on Friday night.

“The kids executed well,” said Bronco Coach Darren Parker. “God is great. That’s the only reason we won this game tonight. We had the odds against us.”

The Broncos are 3-0 overall.

Hill led for the Broncos, carrying the ball 21 times for 87 yards and one touchdown.

Leading rusher for the Devils was Anthony Forrest with 65 yards on 17 carries and one touchdown.

Franklin had 349 yards total offense to the Devils’ 185. The Broncos rushed for 184 yards and passed for 165. The Devils rushed for 121 yards and passed for 64.

Franklin opened scoring with a 5-yard run by senior Melquan Mitchell with 1:23 left in the first quarter. Antone Bland’s kick was good.

Chris Davis responded with 10:01 left in the second on a 20-yard run for Mathews. Ross McLaughlin’s kick was good, tying the game 7-7.

With 2:39 left in the quarter, Bronco senior Trey Kigler passed for 79 yards to senior Justin Grant. The kick failed.

Mathews scored on an 11-yard run by Forest with two seconds left in the half. The kick was good, giving the Devils a 14-13 halftime lead.

In the third quarter, McLaughlin kicked a 27-yard field goal with 5:12 left in the game.

Franklin won the game with Martinez’s scores in the fourth.
