Father proud of 6-year-old for saving brother

To the Editor:

I am a local police officer. I came across a story that hit close to home.

Approximately two weeks ago my 6-year-old son, Ty, was swimming in our pool. My 3-year-old son, Ryan, was playing on the deck with his grandma.

Ryan unexpectedly took off running and jumped in the pool. Ryan can’t swim and was going under.

His grandma was rushing over to pull him out when Ty swam over to him, grabbed him and pushed him to the side of the pool and kept him above water.

Grandma pulled Ryan out of the pool, and he was obviously scared. My wife let me know about the incident, and I immediately told Ty how much of a hero he was.

I think that I was more amazed that Ty recognized that his brother was in trouble and was able to instinctively help out Ryan.

As a police officer, I have seen many adults crumble under pressure and respond incorrectly. I couldn’t have been more proud of him than that day. The first thing he told his new teacher during orientation was that he was a hero and saved his little brother.

Those two argue and fuss, but it’s nice to know that when push comes to shove, they are there for each other.
