Janie Ward

Janie Ward, 94, of 7126 Elwood Rd., Suffolk, departed this life on Tuesday morning, August 24, 2010. She was with family in Boston, MA at the time of her passing.
“Miss Janie,” as she was so fondly known, began her schooling in Como, NC and joined Millneck Baptist Church at an early age. The family moved to Suffolk in the late 1930s. Later, she attended the Adult Learning Program in Franklin, VA, where she was awarded a GED. She also was one of the founding members of the Seventh Day Adventist Church of Franklin, where she was in charge of the Deaconess Board. She was employed as a Domestic, and in later years as a Companion Aide.
She is predeceased by three sons, Eugene Porter, Sr., Roosevelt Boone, Sr., and James K. “Peter” Boone. Survivors include a daughter, Bernice Woodley of Boston; Two daughters in-law, Mary Porter of Boston, and Thelma Boone of Suffolk; 17 grandchildren, a host of great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends, including two life-long friends, Elsie Copeland and Mary Boone, of Suffolk.
A funeral will be held Friday, September 3, 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 218 Hall Street, Franklin. The family will receive guests at the home of LeVonya Boone, 107 St. James Ave., in Suffolk. Elvin Vaughan Funeral Home, 1717 South St., Franklin, is in charge of arrangements
