BRANCHVILLE—A father and son, who barricaded themselves inside their home after the shooting of a family member there on Saturday, have been charged, said Sgt. Wanda Covington with Southampton County Sheriff’s Office.

Danny Carter, 50, was charged with two counts of child neglect. His 17-year-old son, the suspected shooter who was not named because he is a juvenile, was charged with malicious wounding, Covington said.

The victim, Patrick Carter, 19, of Hunterdale was shot in the hand. He was treated and released from Southampton Memorial Hospital, Covington said. The victim is Danny Carter’s son and a brother to the 17-year-old.

Police at 2:37 a.m. got a call from Danny Carter, indicating Patrick Carter, had been shot and was bleeding profusely, Covington said. The 17-year-old was identified as the shooter and police got a warrant for his arrest. The shooting occurred at the home of Danny Carter in the 15000 block of Grizzard Street, where the 17-year-old also lives.

Covington said she assumes that when police arrived, Danny Carter did not cooperate when they asked the juvenile to come out of the home.

“That would be my assumption,” Covington said.

Eight hours later, Danny Carter and the 17-year-old came out of the home with their hands up. Authorities then entered the home.
