That time of year

Call it coincidental, but the slightly cooler temperatures of late seem to have arrived right on cue.

Cooler nights mean many things, but one is that high school football, one of our favorite pastimes, is back. Southampton Academy and Isle of Wight Academy will kick off their regular seasons with home games tonight, and Franklin High School hosts Smithfield in a scrimmage. All other area teams will swing into action next week.

High school football is a great — and cheap — form of entertainment. Our area schools traditionally are among the best in their classifications. The pageantry surrounding the game adds to the atmosphere. Concessions are plentiful and affordable.

Friday night is a fun time to get out and socialize with fellow fans. The slightly cooler temperatures are a bonus in late August — and a welcome break from the brutal heat we’ve endured most of the summer.

We encourage area residents to get out and support their favorite teams tonight and throughout the season.
