IVOR—Bertel Lane, 83, of 37505 General Mahone Blvd., Ivor, passed away Saturday, Aug. 14, 2010, at his home.

A native of Southampton County, Bertel was the son of Charlie and Adnie Johnson Lane.

He retired from the Norfolk Monument Co. after 34 years of service.

Bertel was a member of New Branch Baptist Church, where he was a deacon, usher, member of the Pastor’s Aide Ministry and former Sunday school superintendent.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Florence Lane of Ivor; daughter Marsha Robinson of Ivor; son Willie Bell of Sedley; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister Rosa Lee Wilson of Ivor; brother Edward Lane of Ivor; stepsisters Gladys Chapman, Odell Ricks and Joyce Bowers; sisters-in-law Ruth Lane, Juanita Lane, Joyce Lane, Gloria Lane and Gracie Williams; brother-in-law James Spratley; Goddaughters Edna Cheatom, Marlene Chapman, Deborah Rice and Faye Saunders; and other relatives and many friends.

A funeral service will be held at noon Thursday, Aug. 19, at New Branch Baptist Church, 8140 Proctors Bridge Road in Ivor officiated by the Rev. Frank L. Aikens Sr.

The remains will be placed in the church at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in Davis Family Cemetery.
